Academics

The workshop focuses on planning for communities located along the Pepe River in Surakarta (Solo), Indonesia. It is taught as a year-long sequence of courses. The first semester, students enroll in CRP 5850: Applied Methods for International Development Planning to prepare for working in Indonesia. Students then travel to Indonesia for two weeks over the winter break. Upon returning from Indonesia, students enroll in CRP 5076: International Development Planning Workshop. Because the workshop depends on the interests of students and it seeks to be responsive to the needs of the Indonesian stakeholders, the substantive focus and the deliverables change from year to year. For the past two years the workshop has focused on poverty, environmental sustainability, access to potable water, secure shelter and participatory planning.
